Dr Preeya Elangovan

Dr Preeya Elangovan is a general adult psychiatrist. After completing her undergraduate degree in psychology, she trained in medicine at the University of Sydney and completed specialty psychiatry training in New South Wales. Whilst a psychiatry registrar, she completed a Masters in Public Health at the University of Sydney. As a registrar, she was also on the Trainee Advisory Board of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.

She has a wide range of experience in various adult inpatient and community psychiatry settings in both the public and private sector across rural and metropolitan settings. She has a special interest in perinatal psychiatry having worked at the Mother-Baby Unit at St John of God. She has also had the privilege of working as a staff specialist at the first public Mother-Baby Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital from its inception. She currently works in a specialist perinatal mental health team in Sydney working with women through pre-conception to the first 12 months of the postpartum period.  In addition to her perinatal clinical work, Dr Elangovan also works as a part-time psychiatry member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal.

Preeya

Dr Elangovan has an interest in psychiatry education, participating in medical student teaching and registrar supervision. She has conducted exam preparation workshops for psychiatry trainees undergoing their formal education with HETI. She has also been involved in continuing medical education workshops for GPs, focusing on perinatal mental health and psychiatric medication prescribing in this setting.

With her background in perinatal psychiatry, Dr Elangovan has a deep interest and appreciation of the challenges that infertility brings and the profound impact this can have on every aspect of a person’s life. She feels very lucky to be expanding her clinical role with FertilityPsych and looks forward to contributing meaningfully and compassionately to people undertaking this journey of commencing a family.
